About STUDIO 44 Dance & Fitness
Candace McCarthy, Owner
Candy is a long-time resident of Westport - many members know her from
her work with the Westport Little league and her involvement in fundraising
for various charities over the last two decades.
It was Candy’s awareness of the power of community that led her to create
Studio 44. No stranger to the joy of dance, (her sister owned a dance school)
Candy began dancing with Sue Benton. When the downtown studio space
became available, Candy realized she could unite several passions under one
She could provide a stunning studio environment for health, fitness and
community, and offer a unique and unparalleled venue for parties, gatherings
and events. Candy is experienced in Event Planning with a full skill-set that
includes coordinating floral arrangements, creative themes, decorations and
catering. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” she explains.
“The location of Studio 44 makes it the perfect place for exercise, interaction
and events. I’m thrilled to be a part of the downtown Westport community.”
Sue Benton, Artistic Director
Sue's dance classes aren't traditional classes at all. It's like attending a
wonderful dance party with friends. Her spirit is joyous and infectious, her
choreography entirely original and great fun. The steps are designed so that
everyone from experts to beginners will get a great work-out and have a good
time. Sue is fond of saying, "It doesn't matter what it looks like, it only matters
what it feels like."
Many people have been dancing with Sue for over 20 years. Her classes have been
likened to going Mach II with your hair on fire, though sometimes people go for
slow and easy instead. Sue is also a published author, licensed hypnotist and
Pilates instructor. She used to be involved in leveraged buy-outs but that was after
she got her Master's Degree and before she realized dancing with friends was an
amazing way to live a lifetime.
